Policosanol is a mixture of eight fatty alcohols extracted and patented in Cuba from sugar cane and yams.

In Cuba, policosanol underwent a double-blind study on 80 patients.

Policosanol is said to lower the lousy, or LDL-cholesterol and raise the healthy, or HDL-cholesterol. Policosanol is believed to work by inhibiting formation of cholesterol in the liver

Modulation of HMG-CoA reductase and bile acid absorption inhibition has been offered as possible mechanisms to account for this activity.


Compared to statins, this method is healthier, less expensive and less reliable. It may prove useful however to those that have a normal cholesterol profile and want to maintain it.
